Tottenham Hotspur loanee Josh Onomah was singled out by Aston Villa supporters after the goalless derby draw with Birmingham City.
So the hotly anticipated Midlands derby didn’t quite live up to expectations. In a fitting way to mark the Halloween weekend, Birmingham City and Aston Villa served up a horror of a game at St Andrews, with little in the way of quality throughout a 0-0 draw that does little for either side.
Birmingham remain in deep trouble near the bottom of the Championship after extending their winless run against their local rivals to 11 games. And this is despite the fact summer signing Jota finally made a belated home debut following a hamstring injury.
In fact it was Aston Villa, second best for the opening hour, who came closest to snatching a result that would have taken Steve Bruce’s side to fourth in the Championship. Both Keinan Davis and Jonathan Kodjia hit the woodwork but, in truth, this was a game that deserved little celebration.
And it was arguably the performance of Josh Onomah that best summed up a disappointing 90 minutes on Sunday afternoon. Bruce stated last week that he would be willing to ‘break the bank’ to sign the Tottenham loanee on a permanent deal, as reported by the Birmingham Mail.
But, on this evidence, the 20-year-old did little to suggest he would be worth such a hefty fee.
