Everton manager Ronald Koeman desperately needs a strong result against Lyon in the Europa League this evening, amid concerns over his future at Goodison Park.

After being backed heavily with new signings over the summer, Koeman was expected to push Everton even closer to the top six, but this season is proving to be a nightmare for the Toffees manager.

With four defeats in eight Premier League games and just one point from two Europa League outings, Koeman is under huge pressure – and managers are already being linked with moves to Goodison Park.

The Telegraph report that Paulo Fonseca – manager of Shakhtar Donetsk – was wanted by Everton in 2016 before landing Koeman as Roberto Martinez’s successor, and his name is being mentioned again now.

Sky Bet’s odds for the next Everton manager show Fonseca to be the third favourite at just 8/1, with only Carlo Ancelotti and David Unsworth ahead of him as the Shakhtar boss continues to be linked with a move to Merseyside.

Fonseca, 44, took the Shakhtar job in the summer of 2016, and won the Ukrainian league title and Ukrainian Cup, taking the club into the Champions League group stage again whilst boasting a 79% win rate in charge of the club.

Born in Mozambique, Fonseca has recently managed in Portugal with Porto, Pacos de Ferreira and Braga, but his stock is high after impressing with Shakhtar, and Everton may still have him on their radar.

With Koeman clinging onto his job, the Everton boss needs results quickly – especially with an impressive young manager potentially still a target over a year since Everton’s initial interest.
