Gary Lineker has told BT Sport, during their coverage of Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Real Madrid, that he was hugely impressed by Harry Winks’ performance at the Bernabeu last night.

Winks was given the toughest task of his burgeoning career yesterday, with Mauricio Pochettino selecting him to start in Spurs’ midfield against Madrid.

The youngster could have been overawed by the occasion but, instead, it seemed to inspire him.

Winks put in arguably his best performance in professional football, as he dictated play from his position in Tottenham’s midfield.

And Lineker sung the praises of the newly capped England international after the match.

“We were wondering how Harry Winks would settle in. Big role, right in the middle of the pitch and he did remarkably well,” the former Spurs striker said.

Lineker’s praise was repeated by Frank Lampard, who also thought Winks played brilliantly.

“I was worried for him first 15 minutes, as he looked to be in there on his own, but very impressive and exciting for us Englishmen,” Lampard added.

Winks’ display at the Bernabeu helped Tottenham pick up a highly credible 1-1 draw with Madrid.

Spurs took the lead in the contest against the Spanish giants when Rafael Varane put the ball in his own net, before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised for the hosts.
