Former Rangers target Luke Daniels replaced by his supposed Ibrox predecessor

Rangers wanted to sign Luke Daniels to succeed Matt Gilks in January - but the former Scunthorpe United goalkeeper has found himself on the other side.

Luke Daniels was in inspired form by the time Rangers were linked with a move for the Scunthorpe United goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

HITC source told us that Daniels, who had kept ten clean sheets in 24 games for the promotion chasing Iron at the time, had piqued the interest of the Ibrox giants with just six months remaining on his contract at Glanford Park.

Since then, however, the former Manchester United trainee has fallen off the radar somewhat. Scunthorpe’s previously promising season fell apart in the two months after Daniels was first tipped to depart and The Iron were eventually defeated by Millwall in the play-off semi-final.

Shortly after, Daniels did get his move away from Scunthorpe – joining Championship side Brentford on a three-year deal. Not that this has exactly gone to plan, however. Thanks to the brilliant performances of David Bentley, Daniels has not made a single league appearance for his new club.

And, ironically, the 29-year-old has been replaced at Glanford Park by the man he was supposed to replace at Rangers. Matt Gilks has played every one of Scunthorpe’s 14 league games so far this season and, although Graham Alexander’s side are currently mired in mid-table, the veteran goalkeeper has only conceded on 10 occasions.

The 35-year-old, who didn’t play a single league game for Rangers before initially joining Wigan Athletic in January, is ensuring that Daniels’ departure is not being felt as dramatically as the cynics had predicted.
