Is Tottenham star really up there with Argentine strike legend?

Harry Kane #10 of Tottenham Hotspur reacts in the second half against Roma during the International Champions Cup on July 25, 2017 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

Harry Kane scored his 100th Premier League goal at the weekend, reaching the figure quicker than both Thierry Henry and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The two-time reigning golden boot winner is statistically up there with the best in English football over the past two decades, but comments from head coach Mauricio Pochettino have drawn a negative reaction.

Pochettino said after the game against Everton that Kane reminds him of Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta.

Pochettino played alongside Batistuta for Argentina and is well qualified to make the assessment.

SkySports quoted the manager: “Maybe [he has] different characteristics but I think he is in that level, with Batistuta.

“Batistuta was a killer. I think yes, you can compare, but for me, I put Batistuta there [raises one hand above the other] and Harry [just below] – but Harry can be better than him.”

Batistuta, now retired, was prolific at club and international level, scoring 54 goals in 77 appearances for Argentina.

He scored almost 300 career goals, a tally Harry Kane has a long way to go to match.

He won three league titles during the course of his career and seven major club trophies in total. Kane is still looking for his first.

Pochettino may have his opinion and be well qualified to hold it, but Twitter users did not think much of his comparison…
