Aston Villa returned after the international break with high hopes, having scored eight goals in two matches against Norwich City in the league and Wigan Athletic in the EFL Cup shortly before a 1-1 draw with Bristol City. But a stalemate against Brentford on Saturday saw supporters' frustrations creep back, with manager Steve Bruce coming in for plenty of criticism.

This is now Bruce's side and he has no excuses for the below-par performances too many of his top players are delivering, with summer signing Ahmed Elmohamady poor throughout.

The Egypt international arrived at Villa Park from Hull City in July and he has featured five times for Villa to date, with his latest performance leading some fans to call for his immediate omission from the team.

Elmohamady has plenty of experience following his 217 games for Hull, in which time he scored 11 goals and provided 27 assists.

The problem is the 30-year-old has not brought his best form to Villa and he needs to up his game and use his experience to help the club's next generation, some of whom were in the starting XI on Saturday.

Villa's latest draw leaves them 18th in the Championship with just six points from six matches. That leaves them with a massive amount of work to be done in the weeks ahead to ensure they are not facing a third straight year in the second tier.
