HITC Sport understands Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a deal for Dutch defender.

Sheffield Wednesday are poised to sign Heerenveen centre-back Joost van Aken, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal has been searching for a new defender before the close of the transfer window and it appears he is close to landing van Aken.

The Owls have been short of defensive cover this season with Glenn Loovens and Tom Lees the only two recognised centre-backs available to Carvalhal with Portuguese defender Frederico Venancio waiting for his international clearance.

The 23-year-old was left out of Heerenveen’s 2-1 win at ADO Den Haag over the weekend as the two clubs discussed a deal for van Aken.

HITC Sport understands a fee of £4.5million has been agreed between the two clubs and that van Aken is expected to travel to England this week for talks and a medical at Hillsborough.

van Aken came through the ranks at Heerenveen and has made 84 appearances for the club since breaking into the first-team in 2013.

The Holland Under-21 international will add strenght and height to the Wednesday backline as he stands at 6ft,5in.

van Aken’s arrival will come as a boost to Wednesday as they have won only one of their opening five Championship games.
