West Ham United co-owner David Gold has delivered his verdict on the club’s summer transfer business.
The Hammers have signed five players so far this summer with Pablo Zabaleta, Joe Hart, Marko Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez and young prospect Sead Haksabanovic arriving in East London.
Slaven Bilic‘s recruitment seems to have been markedly improved after some disastrous business last season.
As well as the signings West Ham have thus far managed to hold on to their key players and ship out many of the flops signed last summer.
A 4-0 thrashing in the opening game of the season has done little to vindicate any of the new recruits.
But for the moment at least that game has been written off by supporters who feel the Red Devils will go on and mount a serious challenge for domestic and European honours this season.
Co-owner Gold told BBC Five Live Sport he feels the club have done much better business this time around and hopes to see it make a difference on the pitch.
“We think this has been a particularly good (summer), we think they are good signings that we have brought in as opposed to last year when really they weren’t good and it turned out to be a bad period,” Gold told BBC Five Live Sport.
“But we’re very happy with the signings that we’ve made this year.
“The difference is we are saying to ourselves ‘Look we must bring in players that are experienced in the Premier League’, seasoned internationals and to that end we believe that we’ll be a better side.
“We’re very optimistic that we’ve brought in four top quality players to improve that first team and that’s the important thing.”
The Hammers are also being linked with a club record move for Portugal midfielder William Carvalho.
Should they manage to pull that off, West Ham fans would undoubtedly be happy with their dealings overall.
