Tottenham Hotspur were far superior to Newcastle United yesterday and ran out convincing winners.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino spoke to reporters in the aftermath of his side’s impressive 2-0 win over Newcastle yesterday, and discussed how Jonjo Shelvey’s red card affected the outcome of the game, as quoted by the Mirror.

Many Tottenham fans were in pessimistic mood as their side went into yesterday’s game against the Toon, with no new arrivals to get excited about during the summer transfer window thus far.

Pochettino’s ability to motivate his players, irrelevant of circumstance, cannot be underestimated, however, and despite a sluggish start at St James’ Park, the Lilywhites looked every bit Premier League winners, grinding out a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory.

And Pochettino was asked by reporters whether he believed his side would have still won the game, had the Magpies kept all 11 men on the pitch for the entirety of the 90 minutes, as quoted by the Mirror:

“Yes, of course. we dominated the game. It was difficult to play, the pitch was so dry, they played deep, they played counter attack and it was difficult to find space to penetrate and create chances. But in the second half we played better and then always with a red card it helps because to play against ten always helps a little bit. It makes you comfortable on the pitch.”

The north London outfit will surely now be looking to make some quality additions before the transfer window slams shut at the end of this month.

In the meantime, however, they will be preparing to welcome Chelsea to Wembley on Sunday in what will be a clash of huge significance, despite the fact that it is still so early on in the season.
