Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly ready to step in after the Brentford defender stalled on a new deal.

Sheffield Wednesday are lining up a ‘new’ £1.5 million bid for Brentford centre-back Harlee Dean, The Mirror reports (10 August, page 58).

Dean is said to be stalling over Brentford’s offer of a new contract, with his current one due to expire at the end of the campaign.

As a result, Bees boss Dean Smith – who captained Wednesday towards the end of his playing career – recently stripped Dean of the armband at Griffin Park.

And according to The Mirror, the Owls are ‘planning to step in’ as they continue their search for reinforcements at the heart of their defence.

The Sheffield Star reports Carlos Carvalhal’s side had a deal in place to sign former Arsenal centre-back Johan Djourou at the weekend, but the move collapsed and Djourou joined Antalyaspor instead.

And Wednesday remain with only Tom Lees and Glenn Loovens bonafide options for the role, which can also be filled by left-back Daniel Pudil and midfielder Sam Hutchinson in emergencies.
