Newastle United are reportedly keen on German goalkeeper Lukas Raeder.

According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle United are interested in snapping up free agent goalkeeper Lukas Raeder, though German giants Borussia Dortmund are also plotting a move to sign him.

The Magpies started last season with Matz Sels in goal and ended it with Rob Elliot between the sticks, but Karl Darlow spent the majority of the season as Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeper, with manager Rafael Benitez seemingly unconvinced with his shot-stoppers.

Sels has been loaned out to Anderlecht this summer whilst question marks hang over Darlow’s future, and Newcastle have subsequently been linked with a host of goalkeepers during the summer transfer window, with another name added to the mix.

The Daily Mail report that Newcastle are interested in signing free agent goalkeeper Lukas Raeder, who is available for nothing having decided to leave Portuguese outfit Vitoria Setubal at the end of his contract earlier this summer.

It’s added that Borussia Dortmund are also pursuing Raeder ahead of a possible contract offer, whilst the 23-year-old has even been training with Southampton with a view to offering cover for Fraser Forster, but has been unable to come to terms on a deal.

That has now allowed other clubs to consider moves for Raeder, with Newcastle understood to be keen on a goalkeeper who was formerly on the books with Bayern Munich and even made three first-team appearances for the Germain giants.

Raeder signed a three-year deal with Vitoria Setubal in 2014, making 27 appearances for the club whilst keeping six clean sheets, and his displays in Portugal have now triggered interest in his services.

Dortmund are keen to offer him a return to his homeland, but Newcastle’s first-choice goalkeeping position appears to be open, and Raeder may fancy his chances at becoming a Premier League regular if the Magpies do firm up their interest.
