Magpies boss Rafa Benitez will surely be looking to bolster his defensive options over the course of this month, in an effort to improve upon the solidarity of his back-line.
With a long and physically punishing campaign ahead for Newcastle, the addition of another centre-back must be a priority for the Spaniard, and with this in mind, he should consider a move for Gunners defender Gabriel Paulista, who is available for around £10 million this summer, according to the Sun.
Gabriel in action for Arsenal
The 26-year-old joined Arsenal from Villarreal in January 2015, for a fee believed to be in the region of £13.5 million, but has failed to impress during his time at the Emirates.
It could be argued, however, that his lack of regular first-team action has had a detrimental effect on his ability to perform at the very highest level, and a switch to St James' Park, along with consistent game-time under the stewardship of Benitez could breathe fire back into his flagging career.
Gabriel is a tenacious defender, who always gives 100 per cent no matter what. He is wonderfully versatile, and can operate in both the centre-back and right-back positions with distinction.
The Brazilian has plenty of pace, is strong in the air and leads from the back - all attributes which would surely help improve the Toon's defensive displays.
One concern regarding the Arsenal man, however, is his quintessential South American temperament - something that has cost him on more than one occasion. He is also prone to be reckless at times, and that is something he must improve upon.
For just £10 million though, signing Gabriel would be a risk worth taking for Newcastle.
