13 quotes in 13 months – Theresa May’s time as PM

It’s been a whole 13 months since Theresa May took over from David Cameron as prime minister. Following her failed attempt to win a large majority, it looked like she would not last twelve or even eleven months. Here are 13 quotes from Britain’s prime minister.

1. Speaking on the steps of Downing Street for the first time as prime minister (Source: UK Government):

“I know you’re working around the clock, I know you’re doing your best, and I know that sometimes life can be a struggle. The government I lead will be driven not by the interests of the privileged few, but by yours.”

2. “Unscrupulous bosses”

After becoming prime minister, Theresa May used her very first time at PMQs to attack Jeremy Corbyn and reference his leadership challenge:

“A boss who doesn’t listen to his workers. A boss who requires some of his workers to double their workload, and maybe even a boss who exploits the rules to further his own career. Remind him of anybody?”

3. A sex joke!?

While wishing Conservative MP Peter Bone a happy birthday, the prime minister said that:

“I hope that Mrs Bone is going to treat the occasion in the appropriate manner and…[interruption of laughter from across the House]. Can I…Can I…"

“Bloody difficult woman.”

5. Theresa May calls for a general election (Source: BBC News)

“I have just chaired a meeting of the cabinet where we agreed that the government should call a general election to be held on the 8th of June…At this moment of enormous national significance, there should be unity here in Westminster, but instead there is division. The country is coming together, but Westminster is not.”

6. On NOT attending TV debates

According to the Independent, the PM said that instead of taking part in TV debates, she would be:

“...taking questions from members of the public who are going to be voting on 8 June”.

7. Different types of jobs

That time Theresa May, and her husband Philip, appeared on the BBC’s One Show:

Philp: “There’s give or take in every marriage isn’t there? I get to take WHEN I take the bins out not IF I take the bins out.”

Theresa:“There’s boy jobs and girl jobs you see…”

Definitely one of British politics’ most cringey moments!

8. Strong and…what was the other one?

All those times Theresa May said:

Strong and stable.”

9. Coalition of…what?

And of course, all those times the prime minister referred to the prospect of a Labour-Lib Dem-SNP deal as a:

“Coalition of chaos.”

10. What does Brexit mean?

Another one of May’s classic one liners:

Brexit means Brexit.”

11. Theresa May being naughty

Appearing on ITV, Theresa May was asked what the naughtiest thing she had ever done was.

She replied by saying that (Independent):

“Well, nobody is ever perfectly behaved, are they? I mean, you know, there are times when... I have to confess, when me and my friend, sort of, used to run through the fields of wheat."

12. “Shed a tear”

Speaking to Radio 5 Live about June’s shock exit poll, the prime minister said she “shed a tear” over the prospect of her government losing its overall majority.

13. Jacob Rees-Mogg

In recent months, the odds for Jacob Rees-Mogg becoming Tory leader have narrowed significantly. Speaking to LBC about the prospect of offering Mogg a cabinet position, the prime minister laughed and said:

“He’s a great history buff, and you learn an awful lot when you listen to him.”
