Former Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has told the club's official website that he thinks Jordan Pickford has got the mettle to cope with Premier League football.
The Toffees have been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in the likes of Michael Keane, Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez and Wayne Rooney as the club chase a possible top four finish this season.
The summer of spending was kicked off with the signing of goalkeeper Pickford though, as Everton splashed out a reported £25million – rising to £30million – to sign the Sunderland ace, as reported by The Guardian.
Pickford, 23, was one of the few Sunderland players to impress in their relegation campaign last season, and his superb performances between the sticks unsurprisingly earned him an immediate return to the Premier League.
Now expected to be Everton's first-choice goalkeeper next season and for years beyond, the Toffees will be hoping that Pickford lives up to his huge potential and becomes the next great Everton goalkeeper.
One of his predecessors, Tim Howard, made more than 400 appearances for Everton, and if Pickford can get anywhere near that total, he will have been a roaring success at Goodison Park.
Now, Howard has spoken to the club's official website about Pickford, suggesting that he will be a great goalkeeper for Everton as he has all the talent and the mettle to handle playing Premier League football on a weekly basis.
Howard praised Pickford for how he was unfazed by Sunderland's struggles last season, but did pass on a word of advice, urging him to 'get down and work hard', as Everton is all about loyalty and hard work – and if he does that, he thinks Everton fans will love Pickford forever.
Tim Howard waves goodbye to Everton supporters
“As someone who has worn that shirt for a long time, I’m proud to have Jordan on board,” said Howard. “Any time a player signs with a big price tag, people are looking out to see what is going to happen next, but he’s shown already he has all the ability in the world. Knowing what I know about the Club, he will be given time to settle in and find his feet. Talent-wise, he has got it all. He’ll be a great custodian for Everton.”
“I like his movement, his ability to get about the goal and spring around. In a very tough season for Sunderland, he seemed unfazed which, for a young guy, is very good. He was probably their Player of the Season and that’s a tough thing to achieve when you get relegated. I think he has got the mettle to handle the ups and downs of the Premier League. If I could offer any advice, I would say to him to get down and work hard. Our Club is about loyalty and hard work. You have to put the kilometres in – that goes without saying – but if you do that, the fans will take you under their wing and love you forever,” he added.
