Scunthorpe United boss Graham Alexander was giving nothing away when asked whether he would return to try and sign Newcastle United striker Ivan Toney this summer.
Toney spent the back end of last season on loan at Scunthorpe, and he impressed.
The young forward was handed an important role for the Iron, as they aimed for promotion through the League One play offs.
Although Alexander’s side eventually fell short, there has been talk that Newcastle’s Toney could return.
However, Alexander predicts that the Magpies forward will be an in-demand man this summer, if Rafael Benitez lets him go.
GA: Ivan did a fantastic job for us and we were good for him too. If he's allowed to go out on loan, he will be in demand from other teams.— Scunthorpe United FC (@SUFCOfficial) July 27, 2017
GA: We've done well with our acquisitions so far and we haven't had any loan players so far.— Scunthorpe United FC (@SUFCOfficial) July 27, 2017
It seems likely that Newcastle will allow Toney to leave on loan, as his first-team chances at St. James’ Park look limited.
Toney has a lot of more senior options ahead of him in the pecking order at Newcastle.
And with Newcastle set to bring in more attacking players this summer, Benitez may deem it best for Toney’s development that he heads out on loan.
