Tottenham were put to the sword by a player who was reported to be close to signing for them.

Tottenham Hotspur’s laid back attitude to the transfer market this summer has supporters more nervous than they should be about the upcoming campaign.

They were defeated last night in a friendly match against Serie A side Roma, and a notable name was on the scoresheet.

Making an appearance for Roma was Turkish talent Cengiz Under, who was claimed to be close to signing for Spurs earlier this transfer window.

Tottenham were claimed earlier this summer to have struck a deal to sign the player, with Turkish outlet Ajanspor reporting a move was close.

They were beaten to his signature earlier this month by Roma, who had no problem paying the £11.7 million fee wanted by Istanbul Basaksehir with the 20-year-old signing a five-year deal.

Under scored the second goal in Roma’s 3-2 win over Tottenham, taking advantage of slack defending from Kevin Wimmer.

The youngster has plenty to do to prove himself a top buy at Roma, but £11.7 million is a small fee to take a gamble on.

Perhaps Spurs were worried after their own poor investments in wingers Clinton N’Jie and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, but their trepidation may have cost them a top talent.

Here is a look at how fans reacted to Under’s inevitable goal…
