Newcastle United are reportedly keen on Patrick Roberts after his impressive loan spell with Celtic.

According to The Chronicle, Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts has emerged as a loan target for Newcastle United as Rafael Benitez pursues more signings.

Benitez has tied up four signings for his first team this summer, with Florian Lejeune, Javier Manquillo, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy all signing on the dotted line at St. James’ Park.

Despite landing Atsu and Murphy, Benitez may still be in the market for another winger having seen Yoan Gouffran leave this summer, whilst Rolando Aarons is still working his way back to fitness.

Now, The Chronicle report that Newcastle are looking at taking players on loan from major Premier League clubs, and Manchester City winger Patrick Roberts has emerged as a possible target.

Roberts, 20, joined City from Fulham in the summer of 2015 having emerged as one of English football’s top young talents, but he made just three appearances before being sent on an 18-month loan to Celtic.

After scoring six times in 13 games under Ronny Deila, Roberts also impressed with Brendan Rodgers at the helm last season, notching 11 goals in 47 games before returning to City.

The winger has been given a chance in pre-season by Pep Guardiola, but with competition from the likes of Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and new signing Bernardo Silva, first-team football may be hard to come by for for Roberts – leaving Newcastle to consider a move to take Roberts on loan this summer.

However, Roberts is a right-sided winger who loves to cut inside on his left foot, making him somewhat similar to Magpies ace Matt Ritchie in that regard, and City may want guarantees that Roberts would play consistently for Newcastle rather than face a battle for playing time.
