Carlisle set to sign in-demand non-league striker Bennett.

Carlisle’s manager Keith Curle

Carlisle United have won the race for highly-rated Barrow striker Richie Bennett, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Barrow caught the eye for Barrow last season after joining last summer from Northwich Victoria.

The prolific forward netted 22 goals in his first season in the National League as Barrow finished in seventh spot and just missed out on the play-offs.

Bennett’s goalscoring exploits brought him to the attention of several clubs higher up the football pyramid with the likes of Blackpool, Chesterfield and Crewe all keeping tabs on the player, but Carlisle have moved quickly to land the forward.

Bennett was in the final year of his contract at Barrow and the club were expecting offers for their star striker during this summer’s transfer window.

Carlisle manager Keith Curle is keen to strengthen his squad as he looks to go one better than last season when they missed out on promotion by losing to Exeter in the League Two play-off semi-finals.

Curle has been searching for striking reinforcements after Jabo Ibehre turned down a new deal to join Cambridge earlier this summer and feels Bennett can help fill the void.
