Magpies boss Rafa Benitez will be determined to add some steel to his side over the three weeks that remain until the new Premier League campaign kicks off.
With the step up in class that his Newcastle side face this season in England's top flight, the addition of established Premier League players will surely be a key priority for the Spaniard.
With this in mind, the Toon should consider a move for Gunners midfielder Francis Coquelin, who will be allowed to leave the Emirates this season if a reasonable offer is made for his services, according to the Metro.
Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez and Francis Coquelin in action
The 26-year-old is well-versed in playing at the very highest level, and has showcased his high energy levels and 100 per cent commitment to the cause on a consistent basis during his time with Arsenal.
With his tenacity in the tackle, and the aggressive manner in which he applies himself, he would certainly add more bite to the Magpies' engine room, and could form a formidable central midfield partnership with Jonjo Shelvey.
Coquelin is most comfortable when operating from a deep-lying midfield position, but his incredibly high stamina levels enable him to play more of a box-to-box type role if need be.
He is still under contract with Arsenal until the summer of 2021, but with so many central midfielders available at Arsene Wenger's disposal at the Emirates, Newcastle would surely test their resolve if they made a reasonable offer for the Frenchman.
And if Benitez manages to bring him to St James Park, it could turn out to be one heck of a signing for the Toon.
