Sunderland have taken Dutch goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter on trial ahead of a possible move to the Stadium of Light, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.
6ft 5in ‘keeper Ruiter is currently a free agent after leaving FC Utrecht at the end of last season.
The 30-year-old spent five seasons with Utrecht after joining the club from FC Volendam in 2012.
Sunderland are in the market for goalkeeping reinforcements after seeing Jordan Pickford and Vito Mannone leave the club this summer.
Pickford left to join Everton in a £30million deal, while Italian keeper Mannone joined Championship rivals Reading earlier this week to leave Sunderland down to the bare bones in the goalkeeping department.
Vito Mannone left Sunderland for Reading
Sunderland boss Simon Grayson has been scouring the transfer market for new goalkeepers after missing out to Wolves for former Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy.
Ruiter has emerged on Grayson’s radar and he has linked up with Sunderland for training this week as he tries to impress and secure a move to Wearside.
Sunderland could face competition for Ruiter with Newcastle and Burnley both keeping tabs on the Dutchman as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping options.
