Sheffield United on the verge of completing £500,000 signing of Oxford midfielder John Lundstram.

Sheffield United are closing in on the signing of Oxford United midfielder John Lundstram as his manager Pep Clotet admits a deal is imminent.

The Oxford Mail reports that he Blades have made a £500,000 offer for Lundstram and Clotet is resigned to the fact the 23-year-old will be making the move very soon.

“The club tried everything in their hand to keep the player here because he was important for us,” the U’s boss told the Oxford Mail.

“But it was clear he was keen on getting this opportunity now, so we respect it.

“If he thinks it’s time to move on then it’s his decision, but obviously he was in the last year of his contract.

“I expect to check all the paperwork tomorrow and hope the deal can be finalised then.

“John Lundstram is an important player who can play in the Championship and he must go for the value that reflects that.

“It’s good for him and the club.”

As Clotet mentions, Lundstram has entered the final year of his current deal at the Kassam Stadium, with the report stating that the former Everton man has turned down four separate offers since the midway point of last season.

The ex-England Under-20 international came through the ranks at Goodison Park, but never made a senior appearance for the Toffees and was sent out on five different loan spells.

Lundstram joined Oxford from the Merseyside club on a free transfer in the summer of 2015 and helped them to promotion from League Two in his first year there.

The Englishman has played 104 games in all competitions since the switch to Oxfordshire and was named captain for the 2016/17 campaign.
