And France Football claim that the Spaniard has focused his attention on Ligue 1, with a view to making a €15 million (£13.3 million) offer for Areola.

The 24-year-old Frenchman impressed for Unai Emery’s side last term, conceding 21 goals in 22 outings, whilst displaying a cool and calm influence on his back-line.

Standing at 6ft 3in, Areola is commanding in the air, and a fantastic shot stopper, He also possesses wonderful leadership skills for someone so young – something that would surely appeal to Benitez.

His height and frame make him ideally suited to the Premier League, and with the opportunity of regular first-team football, he could become one of the world’s best in his particular position.

The Frenchman would undoubtedly be a fantastic signing for Newcastle, but whether the Ligue 1 giants will be prepared to sanction his exit remains to be seen.
