West Bromwich Albion are reportedly being put off a move for Watford’s Troy Deeney, so perhaps Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga should be on their radar.
According to a recent report from the Express and Star, West Brom are being put off a move for Watford striker Troy Deeney due to his £30 million asking price, prompting Tony Pulis to switch his attention to strengthening other areas of his squad.
But rather than abandon the idea of trying to sign another forward, perhaps the Baggies boss should consider getting involved in the chase to sign a Championship striker who is reportedly available for half the price of Deeney.
Watford’s asking price for Troy Deeney is putting West Brom off
The Daily Mirror recently suggested that Nottingham Forest striker Britt Assombalonga will cost any interested side £15 million as Middlesbrough and Burnley chase his signature.
Though the 24-year-old has struggled with injuries during his career and is yet to feature in the Premier League, his clear eye for goal should tempt Pulis to consider taking a gamble on making an eight-figure bid for the former Peterborough man.
Assombalonga has scored 30 Championship goals in 65 games for Forest, despite starting just 47 times for the City Ground side and spending significant periods of time on the sidelines.
It is difficult to imagine that Assombalonga would not have been playing in the top flight by now had it not been for injury, so perhaps a Premier League boss taking a gamble on him could reap major dividends.
But surely it would be fair to suggest that, given Deeney’s age – he turns 30 next year – coupled with his decent but unspectacular record in the top flight, saving themselves £15 million and spending it on Assombalonga may prove to be a masterstroke.
