Middlesbrough are closing in on the signing of Derby defender Cyrus Christie after making a new bid for the player, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

New Boro Garry Monk has made a new right-back one of his top priorities this summer with Antonio Barragan on the verge of a move back to Spain.

Boro were interested in a move for Reading and Wales star Chris Gunter, but he has opted to stay and sign a new deal at the Madejski Stadium forcing Boro to switch their attentions to Derby’s Christie.

Derby are willing to listen to offers for Christie after bringing in Andre Wisdom from Liverpool earlier this summer to play at right-back.

Christie, who is entering the final year of his contract at the iPro Stadium, has been first-choice right-back at Derby since his arrival from Coventry City in the summer of 2014.

The Republic of Ireland international made 30 appearances in all competitions last season for Derby, but Rams boss Gary Rowett is ready to let him leave for the right offer.

Boro saw their initial offer for Christie rejected by Derby, but they have come back with an improved offer and they are hopeful of getting the deal done with the player keen on making the move to the Riverside.
