Reading defender Chris Gunter is set to snub interest from other clubs to sign a new deal at the Madejski Stadium, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Premier League new boys Huddersfield and Middlesbrough both expressed an interest in Gunter as they look to bring in a new right-back this summer to strengthen their squads.

New Boro boss Garry Monk had made Wales international his No.1 target as he looks to bolster his full-back options after taking over at the Riverside.

However, Reading have moved to fend off the interest in Gunter by offering him a new three-year deal to keep him at the club and HITC Sport understands Gunter has accepted the offer to stay.

Gunter was enterting the final year of his contract at Reading and his suitors were hoping to lure him away with the player having a £1million release clause, but the player is happy to extend his stay in Berkshire.

The 27-year-old has established himself as a key member of the Reading side under Jaap Stam and captained the side in the Championship play-off final defeat to Huddersfield.

News of Gunter's decision to stay at Reading will come as a massive boost to Stam as he looks to mount another bid for promotion to the Premier League next season.
