Sheffield Wednesday have pursued the Newcastle United defender for more than a year.

Sheffield Wednesday are poised to meet Newcastle United’s £5.5 million asking price for Grant Hanley, The Mirror reports [3 July, page 47].

Wednesday wanted Hanley a year ago, but the Scotland international moved to St James’ Park from Blackburn Rovers instead.

However, with Newcastle pursuing alternatives after their promotion back to the top flight, it appears as though Hanley will be allowed to move on.

Wednesday were beaten in the Championship play-offs last season, and are thought to have earmarked the centre of their defence as a priority area for strengthening.

Following Vincent Sasso’s departure to Belenenses, the Owls have only Tom Lees, Glenn Loovens and Sam Hutchinson to call upon in Hanley’s position – with latter often preferred in central midfield.

The Chronicle reports that Newcastle’s proposed move for Eibar remains close to completion, and the Frenchman’s arrival could enable Hanley’s move Hillsborough.

Newcastle paid £5.6 million for the 25-year-old, who made only 11 starts for Rafa Benitez’s side last season.
