Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing
Downing is said to have been told he is free to leave his boyhood club, following Garry Monk's appointment as manager.
And given Wednesday's need for another winger - not to mention the Owls' penchant for a Middlesbrough player - it is perhaps no surprise they feature so highly on the bookmaker's list of likely destinations.
Sheffield Wednesday's former Middlesbrough striker Jordan Rhodes
Downing has enjoyed a fine career, which began at Middlesbrough and continued at Aston Villa, Liverpool and West ham United, before his second and current spell on Teesside.
Now 32, it's fair to say the 35-cap England international's best days are probably behind him. But could he do a job for Sheffield Wednesday?
He was a Premier League player last season after all - having been promoted with Boro the one before that - although for that reason he is unlikely to come cheap, free transfer or not.
Here's what Wednesday supporters on Twitter have been saying about the prospect of Downing's arrival at Hillsborough...
He's not what we need. We need pace. We need energy! He doesn't offer either of those.— Barlow (@adamholland25) 22 June 2017
He's a good player but he's too similar in style to Wallace.— Billy Seamus Fenelon (@BillyFensterFen) 22 June 2017
#swfc should immediately push the boat out and get Downing on a free. Even though 32, too good to miss. Bargain.— David John Harpham (@DavidHarpham86) 22 June 2017
#swfc why would any Wednesday fan in their right mind not want Stewart Downing?— jorddd (@_JordanEdwards_) 22 June 2017
We can do better— Steven swfc Boswell (@stevenboswell82) 22 June 2017
33 year old is ancient for a winger!— Jonny Rep (@TrapitJon) 22 June 2017
Something like that . Good player who is available but we need a wide man with pace— Tyler Savage (@tsav1867) 23 June 2017
We do mate, not sure downing is that man tho.... Legs have gone a bit for me— Kirk Hunter (@kirk_SWFC) 23 June 2017
Should Sheffield Wednesday make a move for Downing?
