Reported West Ham United target Jurgen Damm was certainly involved as Mexico came from behind to defeat New Zealand.

Mexico’s dramatic 2-1 win against New Zealand in the Confederations Cup on Wednesday can be boiled down to a tale of two wingers. Unfortanately for West Ham, they may be targeting the wrong one, as reported by The Sun.

On the left-flank, Javier Aquino produced arguably the stand-out individual performance of the tournament so far. A bundle of pure electric joy, the diminutive speed-machine was simply unstoppable.

And he had an end-product to back up his sparkling approach work, setting up both El Tri’s second half goals while leaving his 18-year-old marker choking on his dust.

On the right hand side, however, it’s fair to say Jurgen Damm wasn’t quite so effective. Though tying Kiwi left-back Declan Wynne in knots and showing exactly why he was once ranked as the world’s second fastest footballer (behind Gareth Bale if you’re interested), his final ball was virtually non-existent.

Only once in 90 minutes did one of his crosses accurately pick out a team-mate. The rest were either ballooned into no-man’s land or cut out with ease by a sprawling New Zealand defender. And his performance was perhaps epitomised late on as the tournament underdogs pressed for an unlikely, yet deserved, equaliser.

Jinking past one, two, three New Zealand defenders, Damm brought an uninspiring end to a sublime solo run by launching a simple finish way over the bar.

Now, The Sun claimed recently that West Ham were in talks to sign the 24-year-old from Tigres for £4 million. Yet, it appears that Dam has a lot to learn before he’s ready for the Premier League.
