Downing is said to have been made available by new Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk,  with The Northern Echo reporting that he can leave on a free transfer.

The 35-cap former England winger, who had a spell at Sunderland 14 years ago, has spent much of his career to date at Premier League level and counts Liverpool among his former clubs.

However, his return to Middlesbrough, the club he supported as a boy and whose academy he progressed through, has not really gone as planned, despite helping the Teessiders to promotion in his first season back.
