Stuart Webber's deals inspired Huddersfield Town to the Premier League
When you look at the recent transfer activity conducted by Norwich City, and compare it to that of Huddersfield Town, it’s little surprise the Carrow Road chiefs were so eager to lure Stuart Webber.
The Canaries spent well over £20 million last season on the likes of Yanic Wildschut and Sergi Canos, only to finish well outside the play-off places. Webber, meanwhile, was the brains behind a remarkable rise that led Huddersfield to the Premier League for the first time.
The transfer guru helped build a squad capable of succeeding at the play-off final at Wembley despite spending just over £3 million last summer. And, among the inspired loan deals and free transfers, Webber identified a number of affordable, under-the-radar talents that made a huge impact at the John Smith’s Stadium.
And it appears he is following a similar approach at Carrow Road. According to GetWestLondon, Norwich are battling QPR and Birmingham City for rising star winger Dylan Saint-Louis.
Norwich fans won't have heard of Saint-Louis
The 22-year-old has just a year remaining on his contract at Ligue 1 giants St Etienne and could be available for as little as £525,000. And, after netting seven times on loan at second tier Stade Laval last season, it appears that a move to the Championship beckons.
And although Norwich have a far bigger budget than Webber’s former employers, spending over £5 million on three different players last summer, it appears that his bargain-hunting instincts remain as sharp as ever.
Saint-Louis may not be a name that gets Norwich fans dreaming of the title but he is the epitome of the kind of affordable potential that helped Huddersfield defy expectation so dramatically last season.
The days of big-money signings may not be over at Carrow Road but, with Webber calling the shots, it appears that Norwich will at least think outside the box.
