According to reports from the Portuguese newspaper, O Jogo (printed edition; page 19), Manchester City are negotiating a deal for Sporting Lisbon midfielder, William Carvalho.

The report claim that City have made a fresh approach for the Portugal international last weekend.

Pep Guardiola is reportedly keen to bolster his midfield, and sees Carvalho as a perfect fit for the holding midfield role.

Pere Guardiola, brother of Pep Guardiola and Carvalho’s agent, has discussed City’s interest on the player with Sporting.

The Portuguese club are steadfast in their approach for Carvalho – they want any potential club to meet the player’s release clause, which is around €45 million (£39 million).

City are hardly willing to pay that amount, but O Jogo reckon that the Premier League club will hold further talks over the deal.

The report also suggested that City are not the only Premier League club interested in signing the 25-year-old. There is a strong interest from Newcastle United as well.

Earlier this month, The Sun reported that the Magpies have joined the race to sign the midfield metronome.

Rafael Benitez has been reportedly promised a substantial war chest, and the Spaniard could be interested in signing one of the continent’s most impressive young central midfielders.
