Max Meyer scored in Germany’s opening game of the European under-21 Championships last week, showing his intent to end the 2016/17 season on a high.

Meyer began last season as Schalke’s most highly rated talent, but a particular poor season has thrown his future into doubt.

German newspaper BILD linked Tottenham with a £38 million swoop for the winger back on transfer deadline day, but his price tag has dipped considerably since then.

BILD reported in April that Schalke could sell him for £17 million, a discount of £21 million on the discussed price last summer.

Meyer has only one year left on his contract, putting Schalke in a weak negotiating position.

Yet suddenly after his goal for Germany at the weekend, the tide is beginning to turn, with Meyer offering an olive branch that he may commit his future to the club.

Schalke have just appointed a new manager, giving Meyer a potential fresh start.

Speaking to Kicker this week, Meyer said: “I have not had a conversation with the coach yet, but everything is calmly coming back to me, but the hope is that it will soon be better for me.

“I did not say that I would leave Schalke, but only that I did not renew my contract.”

With Meyer getting back to enjoying his football, he could well be tempted to stick around, and Schalke will be keeping a close eye on his progress.

If he continues to hit form, he could very well be persuaded to stick around, and Tottenham might already have missed their window to sign him – especially for a bargain price as his value could rocket if he leads Germany to victory in the tournament.
