According to L’Equipe, Newcastle United want to sign Maxime Gonalons from Lyon.

The French outlet reported on Friday that the Magpies manager Rafael Benitez – who tried to sign him at Napoli – is keen to bring the 28-year-old to St James’s Park.

With one year to go on his contract with the Ligue 1 giants, Gonalons, who has eight caps for France under his belt, is available for around £4.3 million, say L’Equipe.

The defensive midfielder started 42 games for Lyon last season – including six games in the Champions League – and he is clearly a big player for the French side.

And Newcastle fans would love the prospect of seeing him in the North-East ahead of their big return to the Premier League.

The Magpies were linked with Liverpool anchorman Lucas Leiva on Friday too (via The Chronicle), but there is surely only space for one of them at St James’s given how they fulfil a similar role.
