Derby County reportedly wanted Motherwell's Louis Moult - but Nottingham Forest's £1m deal to sign Hibs' Jason Cummings could have a domino effect.

Nottingham Forest supporters can allow themselves a little cautious optimism for the time being. Despite surviving on the final day of last season, by virtue of a better goal difference than Blackburn Rovers, it appears that the club is well placed to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

They have a new, ambitious owner in Evangelos Marinakis, the man who spearheaded Olympiakos to seven straight league titles in his native Greece. Furthermore, manager Mark Warburton is proven at this level having previously taken unfancied Brentford into the play-offs in 2015.

And the club also appears to be spending wisely after the ill-fated continental recruitment drive of last season, with 20-year-old Blackburn Rovers winger Connor Mahoney on the verge of signing, the Daily Record claims.

And just to make the atmosphere even more positive at the City Ground, Forest could be about to inadvertently scupper their local rivals’ transfer plans.

According to the Scotsman, Forest are expected to complete the £1 million signing of 21-year-old Hibs forward Jason Cummings. The stocky striker recently guided the Edinburgh giants to the second tier title by becoming the first player in over 50 years to score more than 20 goals in three straight seasons in Hibs colours.

And the Daily Record claim that Hibs are preparing the react to the loss of their talisman by signing Motherwell frontman Louis Moult – who the Scottish Sun add was a top summer target for Derby County.

The Rams are in need of a goalscorer after scoring the fewest goals in the top half of the Championship last season. And the former Stoke City youngster, who’s scored 36 goals in two seasons for Motherwell, looked like a potentially excellent addition thanks to his £500,000 price tag.

However, Forest signing Cummings could have major repercussions a few miles down the road.
