The right-back could be a superb addition for Everton this summer.

Toffees boss Ronald Koeman will be looking to strengthen his squad in every department this summer, in an effort to make them competitive enough to mount a sustained challenge for the Champions League spots.

One particular area of concern for the Dutchman will be the right side of defence, with first-choice right-back Seamus Coleman ruled out for the long-term with a broken leg, and only 20-year-old Mason Holgate in reserve.

Despite the youngster’s obvious talent, a prolonged period in Everton’s starting XI could prove to be both physically and mentally taxing for Holgate, so the addition of a more established full-back will surely feature highly on Koeman’s agenda.

With this in mind, the Blues should consider a move for Valencia’s Martin Montoya.

The 26-year-old Spaniard is pretty much entering the prime years of his career, and after playing a key role for Los Che during their La Liga campaign this season, he showcased what he is truly capable of, following years of playing a peripheral role at Barcelona.

Montoya is pacey, strong in the challenge and has incredible energy levels. He is perfectly equipped for the English game, from a physical aspect, and the manner in which he contributes both defensively and offensively is ideally suited to the way in which Koeman likes his full-backs to exert themselves.

The former Barca man’s playing style is similar to that of West Ham’s new signing Pablo Zabaleta, and having someone with that kind of tenaciousness and winning mentality at Goodison Park will surely help the Toffees make progress as a football club.

One potential stumbling block will be whether Everton can tempt Valencia into selling the Spaniard, just one year after they brought him to the Mestalla Stadium.

The La Liga side’s finances are not in the healthiest of states, however, so an approach form the Merseyside outfit would surely be considered at the very least.

Montoya is under contract with Valencia for another three years, so he will not come cheap, that much is certain, but if Koeman manages to bring him to Goodison Park, it could turn out to be a real coup.
