Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is rumoured to be on the look-out for another striker this summer, and if the Spaniard sanctions Aleksandar Mitrović's exit, he will surely be looking to add another target man type forward to his ranks.

With this in mind, Newcastle should consider a move for Gunners star Olivier Giroud, who is available for around £20 million this summer, according to Sky Sports.

Despite receiving his fair share of criticism during his time spent in north London, the Frenchman possesses undoubted quality, and there are few better in the game at holding the ball up under pressure in tight areas.

That quality could prove to be crucial for the Toon next term, with their defence expected to be under more intense pressure in the top flight than they were in the Championship during this season just gone.

It is hard to understand why the 30-year-old is so heavily berated by the Arsenal faithful, especially when his impressive goalscoring record is taken into account.

Since he moved to the Emirates in the summer of 2012, Giroud has scored 98 goals in 227 outings for Arsene Wenger's men, with 68 of those appearances coming from the substitutes bench.

The France international's game is seemingly ideally suited to Benitez' favoured direct playing style, and he would be a perfect strike partner for Dwight Gayle, should the Spaniard wish to play with two up front.

He is also left-footed, which would help provide more balance to the Tyneside outfit's attack.

Giroud's vast array of Premier League experience will also be a major asset to Benitez' troops, should the Spaniard manage to bring him to St James' Park.

One potential stumbling block, however, could be meeting his wage demands, with the 30-year-old currently on £100,000 per week at the Emirates, according to the Daily Star.

The Magpies are hardly short of cash though, what with the windfall coming their way following their promotion to the Premier League, and they should do everything within their power to bring the powerful Arsenal star to the north east this summer.
