Cardiff City’s Pete Whittingham scores from the penalty spot

Blackburn Rovers are poised to sign former Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham on a free transfer, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Whittingham is out of contract at the Cardiff City Stadium and he has decided to move on for a new challenge after turning down the club’s offer of a new deal.

The 32-year-old has spent the last ten years at Cardiff, making over 450 appearances for the Bluebirds and he is a big fans’ favourite at the club.

Whittingham played a more reduced role in the starting XI last season, but he still made 37 appearances in the Championship and contributed seven goals and eight assists.

The news will be a blow for Cardiff with Whittingham establishing himself as a key man at the club since his arrival from Aston Villa in January 2007.

A number of clubs are understood to have expressed an interest in Whittingham, but Blackburn have moved swiftly to agree a deal for the former England Under-21 international.

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray is looking to rebuild his squad at Ewood Park following relegation from the Championship last season and he sees Whittingham’s creativity and experience as a vital addition to his squad.
