The Black Cats endured a bitterly disappointing 2016/17 Premier league campaign - one that eventually culminated in their relegation to the Championship.

They finished rock-bottom with just 24 points, 16 points adrift of safety, and without Jermain Defoe's 15 goals, things could have been a whole lot worse for Sunderland.

And the prospect of losing the 34-year-old this summer will be a real concern for fans of the Wearside outfit, with Defoe set to walk away from the club due to a release clause inserted into his contract.

With this in mind, the Black Cats will need to sign a striker this summer to help compensate for their leading goalscorer's departure. The problem is that there is limited funs available at the Stadium of Light, and whoever is in charge will have to be extremely smart in his player recruitment.

The competition to sign talented forwards in this current market is fierce, so Sunderland may have to target a younger model with something to prove, if they are to bring someone of genuine quality to Wearside, and Gunners youngster Chuba Akpom could be just the man for the job.

The 21-year-old has spent extensive spells away from the Emirates on loan in the Championship, and has plenty of experience of playing in England's second tier, despite his tender years.

He is extremely quick and is renowned for making penetrating runs in behind the opposition defence - something that the Black Cats will need next term, when coming up against stubborn, deep-lying defences.

Akpom is also an accomplished finisher. Given the opportunity of a prolonged run of games, he could flourish at the Stadium of Light, and in turn, help Sunderland bounce back immediately to the top flight.
