Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has been discussed as a possible successor to Sam Allardyce at Crystal Palace, according to the Sunday People.

It's little more than a year since the Dutchman's final game in charge of the Red Devils, which ended in a 2-1 win against Palace to clinch the FA Cup.

But Van Gaal could square up against his old side next season and may fancy a reunion with a few of his old players.

Could the following trio join him at Selhurst Park?

Sergio Romero

The Argentine was signed by Van Gaal at both AZ Alkmaar and United, and could feature on the Dutchman's list of potential Palace targets, with Steve Mandanda's future in doubt and Wayne Hennessey and Julian Speroni out of contract. Much will depend on what happens with David de Gea, however, whose departure could see Romero elevated to first choice.

Chris 'Mike' Smalling

An ever-present under Van Gaal, Smalling hasn't always been Jose Mourinho's cup of tea. The England international has been linked with moves to both West Ham United and West Bromwich Albion this summer, however, Palace may also be interested if they cannot get Mamadou Sakho back from Liverpool. Van Gaal's appointment could swing things in their favour.

Marouane Fellaini

Although often utilised by Mourinho this past season, it's plausible Fellaini could be back on the periphery if United make the additions expected of them this summer. Palace are set to release both Joe Ledley and Mathieu Flamini, which would likely create a void for the one-time £27 million man to fill.
