Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion are both keen to sign the Barnsley defender.

According to the Sheffield Star, West Bromwich Albion are set to launch a bid for Aston Villa transfer target Marc Roberts.

Roberts has impressed with Barnsley at Championship level over the past season, and Tony Pulis is now eager to bring the defender to the Hawthorns.

Villa are already interested in snapping up Roberts, with the claret and blues also set to make a move.

And if Roberts does have to pick between the two Midlands rivals this summer, he should opt to sign for Villa.

Although West Brom could offer Roberts Premier League football, the next step in his career should be to take the route to Villa.

Roberts has had a rapid rise up the divisions, and coped with every task through at him so far.

But he would likely be a reserve choice if he was brought to West Brom, and that wouldn’t be ideal for his development.

Instead, at Villa, he would immediately slot into Steve Bruce’s first choice defence, and spending another season at Championship level could be perfect for him.

Villa will be gunning for promotion next term, and if Roberts can seal his position in the claret and blues’ defence, then his progression will be better served by moving to Villa Park, rather than joining Pulis’ side.
