According to The Mirror, Arsenal want a fee of £15million for left back Kieran Gibbs as Newcastle allegedly plot to make their move for the defender.

Gibbs, 27, has come up through the ranks with Arsenal having originally joined the club from Wimbledon back in 2004, leaving the defunct Dons alongside Abu Ogogo and James Dunne in order to sign for the Gunners.

Once touted as the natural successor to Ashley Cole at the Emirates Stadium, Gibbs has struggled with injuries throughout his career, and has made almost 250 appearances for Arsene Wenger’s men.

This term though, Gibbs has started just eight Premier League games, with Schalke’s Sead Kolasinac heading to join Arsenal, it may be time for Gibbs to leave in order to pursue first-team football elsewhere.

The Mirror now report that Arsenal would sell Gibbs for a fee of £15million, with Newcastle United particularly considering making a firm bid for the left back.

The Magpies do have Paul Dummett at left back, but with Achraf Lazaar struggling to make an impact since his 2016 move from Palermo, manager Rafael Benitez may see Gibbs as a major upgrade at left back.

A ten-cap England international, Gibbs would be a proven addition to the Newcastle side, and Benitez is understood to be keen to do a deal – despite £15m being a fairly large fee for a left back with injury problems.

Gibbs himself would have to up sticks and move to Tyneside, but if he wants another shot at international football, then he needs to be playing regularly – and Newcastle may be his best chance of first-team football.
