Video: Southampton XI if they kept their best players

Southampton would have an incredible team if they had held onto their best players.

Southampton have somehow managed to register four top-half Premier League finishes in a row despite the fact that it seems that they constantly have to replace some of their best players.

With that in mind, HITC Sport has compiled an XI made up of some of the players that Saints have had on their books in recent years...

GK: Fraser Forster

Fraser Forster has probably not enjoyed his best season this past term, but on his day, there are few better than him in the Premier League.

RB: Nathaniel Clyne

Nathaniel Clyne is now a key player for Liverpool and has regularly been in the England team over the last few years. He just edges out Cedric.

CB: Dejan Lovren

Perhaps controversially, Dejan Lovren makes it ahead of Toby Alderweireld and Jose Fonte. The former was only on loan at Southampton hence why he misses out, but there are likely to be a number of fans who would have chosen Fonte over Lovren - even as the Portuguese is now almost as unpopular as the Liverpool man.

CB: Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk's form since coming to the Premier League has completely vindicated the Saints' decision to sign the former Celtic man. The Dutchman is exceptional defensively and with the ball at his feet, and has been linked with moves away from the south coast worth over £50 million (via Daily Mirror).

LB: Ryan Bertrand

Ryan Bertrand has been fantastic since arriving from Chelsea so edges out Luke Shaw, who, while he was extremely promising during his time with the Saints, has failed to really kick on since leaving for Manchester United.

DM: Oriol Romeu

Oriol Romeu has really kicked on this season and now looks to be the kind of player that Southampton fans will begin to fear losing at some stage due to his importance to the current team.

DM: Victor Wanyama

The final member of the trio of players Southampton signed from Celtic, Victor Wanyama was brilliant during his time at St Mary's. He is now a key part in former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino's plans at Tottenham.

CM: Adam Lallana

Adam Lallana was a key man for Southampton during their bleakest period when they were situated at the bottom of League One and remained a talisman until his move to Liverpool in 2014, having helped the club reach the promised land.

RW: Sadio Mane

Sadio Mane was a name that few Premier League fans would have heard of when he first arrived at Southampton in 2014, but he certainly made a massive impact with the Saints. He is now one of Liverpool's most important players.

ST: Manolo Gabbiadini

Though his season ended in largely unspectacular fashion, no Saints player has made a better start to life on the south coast than the Italian who scored in his first four games for the club, including a stunning brace in the EFL Cup final where he was wrongly denied a hat-trick.

LW: Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale is one of the world's most expensive players but he is also one of the world's greatest currently. He left Southampton for Tottenham 10 years ago, and is now playing for Real Madrid. He is now a Champions League, La Liga and Club World Cup winner, while he also inspired Wales' incredible run at Euro 2016.
