Celtic have been linked with a move for free agent Martin Caceres following his short spell in the Premier League with Southampton.

A recent report from The Sun has suggested that Celtic are one of the teams in talks to sign Uruguay defender Martin Caceres following his release from Southampton.

But while the 30-year-old has played for the likes of Barcelona and Juventus during his career and has won the Champions League, a La Liga title, and five Scudettos with Juve, the Hoops would surely be wise to consider avoiding making a move.

Caceres has been a talented defender for much of his career, but since featuring in Juve's game with Genoa at the start of February 2016, he has played just once having been released by the Old Lady last summer and only featuring in the Saints' game with Middlesbrough in May following his January arrival.

Injury has plagued much of his recent career and the centre-back has not played more than 20 league games in a season since making 25 top flight appearances for Sevilla during the 2010/11 campaign.

Celtic already have several impressive centre-backs at their disposal, and most are at an age where they should continue to get better over the coming years.

And while Caceres may have a positive influence on them if he arrives, it is surely fair to say that Brendan Rodgers would be better off investing in other areas of the squad or on a different target as the defender's list of previous clubs arguably hints that he may well be expecting a decent wage if he was to move to Parkhead.

Of course, if he joins, Caceres could prove to be a brilliant addition if he shows that his quality is still there and his injury problems are in the past, but at the moment, it is surely a big gamble for the Hoops to bring him in this summer.
