9 Manchester United transfer sagas that never eventually happened

Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos during the press conference

Imagine how many titles Manchester United would have won if they had signed at least one of these!

If there has been one thing that Manchester United have been pretty consistent about since the beginning of the Premier League, it's transfers. Sure, they might end up with a few lame ducks, but they always seem to get their man - that is expect these nine players whose completed transfer never quite materialised.

Sergio Ramos

A few summers ago, then Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal was infatuated with Sergio Ramos, and was adamant that he was going to get his man so he wasn't stuck with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.

But while Van Gaal tried to reportedly sign Ramos on several occasions, Ramos instead used Manchester United's interest to get himself a bumper new contract at the Bernabeu...His agent is a genius!

The amount of paper used to print rumours linking Snjeider to Manchester United over the years could cover the world at least twice.  Seriously, there wasn't a day for about two seasons that the Dutchman wasn't linked with a move to Old Trafford - but it never happened.

Alan Shearer

The leading Premier League goalscorer decided to pick his boyhood club over Sir Alex Fergusson's Manchester Unites in 1996 - and it didn't please many Red Devils fans.

While Shearer failed to win anything with Newcastle, he did mark his place as a club legend.

How close did the Brazilian come to signing for Manchester United? Really, REALLY close! Could you imagine him nutmegging Nikos Dabizas?! That would have been glorious.

Unfortunately for Manchester United fans, Barcelona swooped in at the 11th hour and snapped him up, leaving Ferguson to sign some bloke called Cristiano Ronaldo.

Cesc Fabregas

David Moyes couldn't catch a break when he took over at Old Trafford. Not only to did he lose out on the likes of Toni Kroos, Arturo Vidal and Thiago - but he also failed to sign Cesc Fabregas.

Manchester United tried on several occasions to try and sign the Spaniard from Barcelona, only for Fabregas to claim that he never wanted to leave Barcelona...hmm.

Leighton Baines

Things got so desperate for Moyes in his first summer at Manchester United that he tried to sign Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines in one £28million deal.

However, Everton weren't falling for that and decided to accept a bid for Fellaini of £27m and reject a later bid for Baines.

Chelsea's John Obi MikelChelsea's John Obi Mikel

John Obi Mikel

One of the most complicated transfer sagas ever.

The Nigerian dazzled everyone at the Youth World Cup in 2005 and was on the radar for lots of big clubs. Now, Manchester United claimed that they had signed Mikel directly from his club Lyn and The Red Devils announced it on their website.

Chelsea made a counter claim that Mikel and his agents had already agreed a deal, and that the 18-year-old had already been training with Jose Mourinho's side more than a year earlier.

Some more really boring and complicated stuff happened until Chelsea agreed to pay United £12.5m and £4m to Lyn for Mikel.

Michael Ballack

Manchester United fans, who would you rather have - Michael Ballack or Owen Hargreaves?

Well, you ended up with the latter because Ballack decided that Manhester United weren't doing well enough in Europe. He instead went on, of course, to join Chelsea.

Michael Essien

Another transfer saga that involves Manchester United and Chelsea? Blimey!

Essien had long been linked with a move to Old Trafford, having already spent time at the club during a trial back in 1999. And Fergie was all set to sign him, but he couldn't secure a work permit for the Ghanaian midfielder.

A few years later, and Essien was wanted by just about every club and they all got into a bidding war for the then Lyon player. While Manchester United tried to sign him, Chelsea agreed to pay the big bucks and so he went to Stamford Bridge to play with Ballack and Mikel.
