The Championship's longest-serving XI; featuring Newcastle and Aston Villa players

Paul Dummett celebrates after scoring the third goal for Newcastle

We pick an XI with some of the Championship's longest-serving players; featuring those from Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme is closing in on 14 years as a professional at the club. In that time, the 30-year-old has played for seven loan clubs and still collected over 200 appearances for the Wanderers.

Norwich City signed Russell Martin ahead of their League One campaign in 2009. The right-back, who has since captained the Canaries in the Premier League, made his debut in a 3-0 away win against Southend United.

Paul Dummett only missed one league game all season for title-winning Newcastle United. The academy graduate has over 100 appearances for the Magpies after breaking into the senior side in 2014.

Centre-back Tommy Smith is on the verge of a 10-year stay at Ipswich Town. Smith, 27, missed most of the 2016/7 season with a back injury. Fellow defender Danny Batth has racked up close to 200 games in seven years as a professional at Molineux.

Jason Lowe captained Blackburn Rovers during their disappointing relegation campaign. The versatile 25-year-old was handed a Premier League debut in Rovers’ 2-0 defeat away to Chelsea in 2011.

Chris Cohen and Peter Whittingham have nearly 20 years of service to their respective clubs between them. Cohen recently signed a new deal with Nottingham Forest to take his spell at the City Ground past a decade. Whittingham’s Cardiff City future is still unclear after notching up over 450 games and 96 goals.

David Edwards marked his ninth year at Wolves by netting double figures. The Welsh international scored on his league debut for the club back in January of 2008.

Seven months after Edwards joined Wolves, Norwich City signed playmaker Wes Hoolahan from Blackpool. Hoolahan continues to be an important figure in the Canaries’ side with seven goals and 11 assists this season.

Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor rounds off this XI. The 30-year-old has 73 top-flight strikes to his name but only scored one Championship goal last season – that came in the crucial Second City derby against Birmingham City.
