Bolton Wanderers are leading the race to sign former Mansfield Town striker Matt Green, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Green is a free agent after seeing out his contract at Mansfield with his current deal expiring this summer.

The 30-year-old scored 13 goals for Mansfield this season in League Two as they just missed out on the play-offs.

Overall Green scored 29 goals in 95 games in his second spell for the club after signing from Birmingham City on a free transfer in 2015.

Green saw his spell at Birmingham in the Championship restricted by injury with the striker being sidelined for almost 18 months of his two-year stint at St Andrew’s due to a serious cruciate ligament injury.

News of Green’s availability on a free transfer has alerted a number of clubs with Championship-bound Bolton weighing up a move for Green as they look to bolster their attacking options for next season.

Newly-promoted pair Portsmouth and Plymouth Argyle are also eyeing Green as they prepare for life in League One next season and Green impressed against both clubs this season for Mansfield.

Green is also weighing up an offer from Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids with the Rapids keen to lure the former Cardiff man to America, but Bolton are hoping to win the race for his signature.
