After being forced to scrimp and save by owner Mike Ashley in January, it appears that Rafael Benitez may get his wish this time around.
The Sun claimed that the Spaniard wanted £100 million to reinforce his squad ahead of The Magpies’ return to the Premier League next season. And it appears that Ashley is surprisingly obliging, pledging to make a substantial warchest available to his Championship title-winning manager this summer, The Chronicle adds.
However, this does not mean Newcastle will kick off their transfer plans with a big-money marquee signing. Leganes playmaker Gabriel Pires told El Economista in February that the North East outfit made an approach in the winter and it appears that Newcastle are ready to renew their interest with promotion in the bag.
Marca claims that Gabriel remains on the club’s radar and, based on his recent performances in La Liga, you can see why. The Brazilian put in arguably his finest performance of the season on Monday night, scoring as Leganes thrashed Real Betis 4-0 to give their hopes of survival a major boost.
Leganes are one point away from securing their safety in La Liga
That was Gabriel’s fifth goal in an impressive debut campaign in the Spanish top flight. Though a stunning free-kick against Barcelona early in the season earned the 23-year-old wider acclaim, his dynamic dribbling and hard-working displays have made him one of La Liga’s most under-the-radar talents.
And with Benitez making clear his desire for a more creative, goalscoring midfield at Newcastle, Gabriel could be an intelligent addition – even if he’s not the eye-catching addition fans are hoping for.
