Maddison has been placed on the transfer list at London Road as the club routinely place all players in the final 12 months of their contract up for sale.
The release clause has only been triggered because Maddison is entering the final of a four-year deal he signed at Peterborough.
News of Maddison’s release clause has alerted a number of clubs higher up the football pyramid with the winger regarded as one of the best talents outside the top two divisions in England.

The skilful attacker has laid on the most assists in League One for the last two seasons and his availability at £1.5million would make him a bargain for his long list of suitors.
Peterborough have turned down several big-money offers for Maddison in the past and Posh owner and chairman Darragh MacAnthony is understood to be unhappy at the prospect of losing one of the club’s prized assets for as little as £1.5million.
Leeds United came close to sign Maddison in January only for the move to fall through, but the Elland Road outfit could rekindle their interest in Maddison knowing he is now available for a lot less than the fee they would paid for him in January.
A number of other Championship clubs are also weighing up moves for the former Newcastle youngster as they look to bolster their attacking options for next season.
