Tottenham Hotspur defeated Crystal Palace in a close Premier League encounter.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League title ambitions were extended a stay of execution after Mauricio Pochettino’s side emerged victorious from a hard-fought clash with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Spurs’ 1-0 triumph arrived courtesy of an outstanding late goal from midfielder Christian Eriksen – who, after controlling the ball on the half turn mid-way into Palace’s half, took a second touch to settle himself before dispatching a superb long-range effort beyond Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey and into the bottom corner of the Eagles’ net.
Eriksen’s 78th minute game-winner means that Spurs have moved onto 74 points, four behind table-toppers Chelsea, and maintain their hopes of challenging Antonio Conte’s side for the Premier League crown.
The 30-yard-strike from the Denmark international was accompanied by an almost palpable sense of joy and relief amongst the Spurs players and fans alike – which was perfectly incapsulated by images of Eriksen’s post goal celebrations.
Prior to sliding to his knees in front of the away fans, Eriksen was snapped reeling away towards the touchline, arms spread out in jubilation, with a huge smile spread across his face – before being mobbed by ecstatic teammates and enraptured Spurs supporters.
After this crucial win over Palace, Tottenham face North London rivals Arsenal at White Hart Lane on Sunday, before remaining in the capital for an away game at West Ham United and the hosting of Manchester United – with Spurs’ final game of the season being at reigning Champions Leicester City.
Meanwhile, Chelsea, who have an inferior goal difference to Spurs, play Everton away, Middlesbrough at home, West Bromwich Albion away and their season closer against Watford at Stamford Bridge.
