Jan Vertonghen is one of the best defenders in the Premier League and is a key figure in the current Tottenham Hotspur team.

Vertonghen may be in his late 20s, but the Belgium international is playing as good as ever and has formed a strong partnership with Toby Alderweireld at the back for Spurs.

The former Ajax centre-back has featured in 27 Premier League matches for Tottenham so far this season, creating six chances in the process.

Former Tottenham manager David Pleat has been impressed with the performances of Vertonghen, and has included him in his perfect XI from the current Spurs team and the one from 1987.

The 72-year-old has also praised the 29-year-old Belgian for choosing Tottenham over bitter North London rivals Arsenal.

Back in December 2012, Vertonghen was quoted as saying by Sky Sports that Arsenal wanted to sign him in the summer of 2012, but he choose Spurs because their overall picture appealed to him more.

“Made a great decision to ignore overtures from neighbours Arsenal and sign for Spurs,” Pleat wrote about Vertonghen in The Daily Mail. “His left foot is a wand. Always looks to pass and when he does he does so with perfect accuracy. The game comes easy to him.”

Tottenham are second in the Premier League table at the moment, while Arsenal are currently sixth in the standings.
